Case, Comfort Lab

The window decides the air conditioner.

Comfort Lab is a touchscreen kiosk for the Cooper&Hunter dealer in Batumi. A customer describes their room in seven taps, watches it build itself in 3D, and sees which unit it really needs, and why. It runs in the shop with no internet, and on the web.

Why it exists

Shops sell by floor area. Batumi rooms do not behave like floor area.

A 20 m² room with a sea-view glass wall can need the cooling of a room almost twice its size. Sold by the label on the box, it gets a unit that runs flat out all afternoon and never reaches 24 °C. Comfort Lab calculates the room the way an engineer would, then gives the answer in the language the shop already speaks: square metres.

The visit

Seven questions, one room.

Every answer changes the room behind the panel. The walls and floor follow the building, the furniture pops in for the room type, the compass turns with the direction, the afternoon sun moves across the floor and the window grows on the wall. Nothing moves on until the customer presses Next, so trying an answer costs nothing.

Underneath

An engineering calculation, not a rule of thumb.

The engine is the product. Everything the customer sees is drawn from it, and every number in it has a source.

  1. The sunHourly sun position for Batumi on the design day, within 0.05° of NOAA, and the ASHRAE clear sky model for direct and diffuse light on every wall and window.
  2. CoolingHour by hour over the design day: sun through each window with exact shading from the reveal and any balcony above, heat stored in the room and released later, walls, roof, outside air, people and devices, and Batumi's humidity as a load of its own.
  3. HeatingThe EN 12831 method at the winter design temperature, against what the unit really delivers in the cold, defrost included.
  4. Room temperatureAn ISO 13790 hourly room model gives the numbers on the thermometer: the closed room on a hot afternoon, the unit sized by floor area, and the right one holding 24 °C.
  5. The choiceInverter capacity rules after ACCA Manual S. It never recommends a bigger unit to be safe: an oversized unit cycles on and off and dries Batumi's air badly.
  6. ProofForty-two automated tests, ten reference rooms that flag any drift above one percent, and every formula checked against its source before release.
The room

A 3D room, built entirely in code.

  • Real-time three.js on WebGL 2: soft sun shadows, ambient occlusion, bloom, depth of field and a filmic grade
  • A dollhouse cutaway with the compass, the sun's bearing and the room's measures drawn around it
  • Furniture for five room types, modelled in code and laid out to fit any room from 5 to 200 m²
  • Camera moves directed like a shot: a hold, a curved crane path, an eased landing
  • Quality that adapts by itself, from a 4K screen down to a TV box
The answer

Summer and winter, each on its own.

Summer: the right unit holds 24 °C
Summer: the right unit holds 24 °C
Winter: the room against the unit at −2 °C
Winter: the room against the unit at −2 °C
In the shop

Built to stand in a shop all day.

  • An attract loop that runs on its own when nobody is near
  • Touch first: big targets, hold to repeat, no typing
  • Resets itself after a minute of silence
  • Works with no internet: every file is kept on the device after the first visit
  • Georgian first, then Russian, English and Turkish
  • An engineer view behind one button: every input, every number, and a heat camera
The brand

Their logo. Our room.

The Cooper&Hunter logo is used exactly as they publish it. Everything around it is ours: a thermal scale with 24 °C as white, the Batumi arc for the July sun over the sea, and one idea. Cooper cools, Hunter heats, we show the air in between.

What it is made of.

  1. Todaythree.js r170 bundled with esbuild, plain JavaScript and no framework, a service worker for offline use, served from Vercel.
  2. The engineA dependency-free JavaScript reference with its own test suite, written to be ported line for line.
  3. ProductionVite, React and TypeScript as an installed web app in Microsoft Edge kiosk mode on Windows 11. In progress.
  4. One repositoryThe kiosk, the dealer's future website and the shared engine in one pnpm workspace.
